三重県伊賀市阿保の古民家には、塀に沿って柑橘の木が並んでいます。秋には橙や柚子が色づき、台所の窓を開ければ、そのまま手が届く。買うものではなく、庭で実るもの——田舎の家ならではの距離感です。
初夏には、生垣の根元で白い小花がいっせいに咲きました。雑草と言ってしまえばそれまでですが、手入れの手が入るのを待っている庭でもあります。二階の縁側に立つと、瓦屋根の集落の向こうに、伊賀の山並みがゆるやかに連なって見えます。
季節が、窓の外ではなく、暮らしのすぐ隣にある。古民家を住み継ぐ楽しみのひとつを、この庭が教えてくれます。Along the wall of our kominka in Abo, Iga (Mie), a row of citrus trees grows. In autumn the daidai and yuzu take on color, and if you open the kitchen window, they are right there to pick. Not something you buy, but something the garden bears — a closeness particular to a house in the countryside.
In early summer, small white flowers opened all at once at the foot of the hedge. You could call them weeds, but it is also a garden waiting for a caring hand. Stand on the second-floor engawa and, beyond the tiled rooftops of the hamlet, the gentle ridgelines of Iga's hills run on.
The seasons sit not outside the window but right beside daily life. This garden teaches one of the quiet pleasures of carrying on an old house.
