瓦屋根の構え——日本家屋の屋根を読むReading a kawara roof — the shape of a Japanese house's tiled eaves
京町家や古民家の屋根を見上げると、銀鼠色をした瓦が幾重にも重なり、軒先へ向かってゆるやかに反りあがっているのがわかります。一枚一枚の瓦は丸みを帯びた「本瓦」や「桟瓦」と呼ばれる形で焼かれ、隣り合う瓦の谷と山を組み合わせながら葺かれています。屋根の頂には棟瓦が一列に積まれ、家の輪郭を通りから見てまっすぐに引き締める役割を果たしています。
瓦屋根が古くから選ばれてきたのは、見た目の美しさだけが理由ではありません。焼き物である瓦は水を通しにくく、重なりながら葺くことで雨水を軒先まで一方向に流し、下地の木部を守ります。また瓦そのものに重みがあることで屋根全体が安定し、藁葺きや板葺きに比べて延焼しにくいとされ、家々が軒を接する町なかでは防火の観点からも重宝されてきました。
物件を見に行くときは、瓦の並びが波打っていないか、谷樋や棟のあたりに雑草やコケが目立っていないかを遠目にでも確かめておくと安心です。瓦がずれていたり割れていたりすると、そこから雨水が下地に回り、天井裏や壁のしみとして現れることがあります。屋根の上に自分で登って確かめることはできませんし、経年による瓦の状態は素人目には判断しにくいので、気になる点があれば瓦葺きや屋根工事に慣れた業者に一度見てもらうのが確実です。Look up at the roof of a kyo-machiya or a kominka and you will see silvery-grey tiles layered row upon row, curving gently upward toward the eaves. Each tile is fired into a rounded shape — a hongawara or sangawara — and laid so that the ridge of one interlocks with the valley of the next. Along the very top, a line of ridge tiles is stacked to draw the house's silhouette into a single clean line when seen from the street.
A kawara roof was never chosen for its looks alone. Fired clay sheds water well, and laying the tiles in overlapping rows sends rain in one direction, down to the eaves, protecting the timber frame beneath. The weight of the tiles themselves also helps hold the roof structure steady, and compared with thatch or wood shingle, a tile roof is far less likely to carry a fire — a real advantage in a townscape where houses stand eave to eave.
When you go to view a property, it helps to check, even from a distance, whether the rows of tiles run in an even line or seem to wave, and whether weeds or moss have taken hold around the valleys and ridge. A tile that has slipped or cracked can let rain work its way into the frame beneath, showing up later as a stain on a ceiling or wall. You cannot climb up and check the roof yourself, and judging the true condition of aged tiles is not easy for an untrained eye, so if anything looks off, it is worth having a roofer experienced with tile roofs take a proper look.
